Smoothies are great. There’s no getting around it. And they’re become so popular that there are companies who sell only smoothies or smoothie ingredients.
Smoothies aren’t a fad, though. They are one of the best, easiest ways to get a whole bunch of nutrition and nourishment, especially in the morning.
They’re also an amazing way to “hide” ingredients you may not otherwise love or enjoy and wrap them in a delicious, easy-to-consume package. In just one smoothie you can put all the veggies, fruits, proteins, healthy fats, and fibre you need to keep your body happy and healthy in the convenience of one cup.
My Favourite Smoothie
For me, smoothies are a great breakfast option. I just put everything in the blender and go. Here’s the recipe I’ve perfected over the years that makes my mornings great.
This recipe has veggies, fruit, protein powder, and a healthy fat, which keeps me up and going until lunch. (It even has turmeric in it, which is great for reducing inflammation.)
1 cup of kale or spinach or zucchini
1 cup of frozen fruit – (I like field berries, cherries or blueberries)
¼ ripe avocado or 2 TBSP homemade almond butter
1 TSP of turmeric
1 TSP of ground flax seeds
1 scoop of cocoa acai smoothie booster
1 scoop of Vegan protein powder
2 cups of water
Add water to blender first and then add the rest.
Blend to the consistency you like.
Sprinkle 1 TBSP of Cocoa crunch on top
Prepping Your Smoothies
Meal prep for your smoothies is really straightforward. Cut all your fruits and veggies and put them individual portion bags or freezer-safe containers. Portion out any frozen ingredients you’re using and put them in the same container so you only have one to grab.
For the dry ingredients, I keep them ready and available – but all together – in my kitchen. Having them close to where I make my smoothies is key, so I don’t have to go to three places to grab my flax seeds, turmeric, booster, and protein powder. If that’s too much thinking before your coffee has kicked in, then put all your dry ingredients together in with your frozen/fresh ingredients and just dump it into the blender. So easy.
As with all meal prep, doing this keeps your actual making time down to about 5 minutes total. You can do this, even if you’re not a morning person.
Smoothie Tips and Tricks
Smoothies are a great place to put your fresh produce that had to be frozen because it was getting to the end of its life. If you see something getting to a point where it wouldn’t be good in a dish, and it’s not on your meal plan for that week, cut it up and pop it in the freezer for smoothies. This is especially good for seasonal fruits and veggies you buy on-the-fly. Wasting food super sucks, so this is one of my favourite tips.
Play around with the taste of your smoothies. Sure, you can try all the recipes out there, but if you don’t like it, you won’t drink it. There’s so much versatility in smoothies that there’s no reason not to make it exactly the way you like it. Figure out what you enjoy, have fun, and go for it!
Get yourself a good travel tumbler or water bottle to be able to transport it so you can drink and walk without all the spills! I find that this is a big reason why people don’t make smoothies. They had the wrong type of container, tried to travel with it, and it was a disaster. Even if you’re not travelling, smoothie can be hard to drink. Try some things and figure out the right straw/container combination for you. It can be done, I promise!
So ,if you’ve been on the fence about smoothies, or have had them before and got out of the habit, use this as a great excuse to give them another try. Find a recipe that includes all the food groups, organize your freezer and cupboard, get yourself a great travel mug, and start creating!
